Carcassonne is a tile-placement game in which players draw and place tiles with various terrain features (city, road, field, and cloister) in order to build up the French city of Carcassonne. The game is named after the medieval fortified town of the same name located in southern France. It was first published in 2000 by German game company Hans im Glück in German and by Rio Grande Games in English.
The game has since been translated into over 20 languages and sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular games of all time.
Carcassonne is considered to be a "gateway game" - a game that is simple enough for new gamers to learn, but with enough depth to keep experienced gamers interested.
The game is played with tiles, which are placed on the table to create the landscape of the city of Carcassonne. Each tile has a different terrain feature on it, and players must place their tiles so that the features match up. For example, a road tile must be placed next to another road tile, or a city tile must be placed next to another city tile.
Players can also place their tiles so that they create new features, such as a city with a road running through it. When a player creates a new feature, they can place one of their playing pieces (meeples) on that feature. The first player to place all of their meeples is the winner.
Carcassonne is a great game for families and groups of friends. It can be played with two to five players, and takes about an hour to play.
