Asterix is a French comic book series about a village of indomitable Gauls in the time of the Roman Empire. The series first appeared in the French comics magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. It was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo until the death of Goscinny in 1977. Uderzo then took over the writing until 2009, when he sold the rights to publishing company Hachette. The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the drinker superhuman strength. The main setting for the strip is the village, which is surrounded by Roman camps. The protagonist, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In 2012, a new series, Asterix and the Missing Scroll, was launched, written by Jean-Yves Ferri and illustrated by Didier Conrad.
