In December 1805, Napoleon defeated a Russo-Austrian army at the Battle of Austerlitz.

The coalition partners then invaded France in 1806, forcing Napoleon to retreat from Central Europe. In October 1806, Napoleon defeated the Prussian army at the Battle of Jena-Auerstedt. The French then invaded Spain, forcing King Charles IV to abdicate in favour of his son, Napoleon's brother Joseph.

In March 1808, Napoleon invaded Italy, defeating the Austrian army at the Battle of Landshut. The following month, Napoleon's forces inflicted a crushing defeat on the Spanish army at the Battle of Somosierra. In early 1809, the Austrians and the British declared war on France, but Napoleon defeated them at the Battle of Eckmühl in April.

In May 1809, Napoleon defeated the Austrians again at the Battle of Wagram. The following year, Napoleon invaded Russia, but was forced to retreat in the face of the Winter Campaign. In 1813, the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. The following year, Napoleon defeated the Coalition at the Battle of Arcis-sur-Aube.

In 1815, Napoleon was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by the Seventh Coalition, which included the British, the Prussians, and the Dutch. Napoleon then abdicated and was exiled to the island of Elba.
