Scrabble is a board game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns, and be included in a standard dictionary or lexicon. The words must be defined in a standard dictionary, and cannot be proper nouns, abbreviations, or words that require a hyphen or an apostrophe.

Players take turns placing tiles on the board, with each turn consisting of either:

• Placing a single tile on the board to form a new word.
• Placing two or more tiles on the board to form one or more new words. In this case, each tile placed must touch at least one other tile, and each new word must use at least one letter already on the board.

When placing tiles to form new words, the player may:

• Place the tile horizontally or vertically adjacent to an existing tile of their own color, thereby extending an existing word.
• Place the tile horizontally or vertically adjacent to an existing tile of any color, thereby forming a new word that crosses an existing word.
• Place the tile horizontally or vertically adjacent to an existing tile of any color, thereby forming a new word that uses one or more letters of an existing word, but does not cross it.

If a player cannot place a tile on the board, they must draw a tile from the bag and forfeit their turn. If there are no tiles left in the bag, the player passes their turn.

Once all of the tiles have been placed on the board, the game ends and the player with the highest score wins.

Points are scored by:

• Placing a tile on a square with a letter multiplier. These squares double or triple the point value of the letter placed on them.
• Placing a tile on a square with a word multiplier. These squares double or triple the point value of the word formed by the tiles placed on them.
• Placing a tile on a square with a letter bonus. These tiles award the player extra points for using them in a word.
• Placing a tile on a square with a word bonus. These tiles award the player extra points for using them in a word.
• Using all of the player's tiles in a single turn. This awards the player a bonus of 50 points.

Scrabble has been played in Spain since the early 1950s. The game is currently manufactured by Mattel and sold under the name "Scrabble Original".
